Poles Crash Out

Poland’s national team took another painful lesson in big-boys football on Wednesday night, going down 3:0 to Sweden in Stockholm. The result leaves Poland with only a very theoretical chance of reaching the European Championship finals next year. The Poles have seven points to Sweden and Hungary’s 11 and Latvia’s 10.
For the most part the defeat came courtesy of another patchy performance by Poland’s unsettled midfield. Turkish club Genclerbirligi SK Ankara’s Tomasz Zdebel and Wisla Krakow’s Miroslaw Szymkowiak were at fault for the first two goals. More importantly, though, the pair failed to exert any sort of control over the game. Sweden’s midfield, most of whom play for top clubs in the English premiership were quicker to the ball and sharper with their passing throughout the first half. The Swedes relaxed somewhat in the second 45 minutes, but still added a third goal, Southampton midfielder Anders Svensson placing a free kick ideally in the top corner of Jerzy Dudek’s goal.
The reaction to the defeat was fairly comprehensive from both players and media alike. “I’m just embarrassed. We didn’t fight for it, and without that in Europe you’ve no chance. 0:3 is a humiliation,” Lens centre-back Jacek Bak told Gazeta Wyborcza.
Despite the signs of promise in the team over recent games, there was also already talk of changing the team around, in particular from Polish FA boss Michal Liszkiewicz. The big problem is that after a year in which a total of 70 players have been named in different squads, it is far from clear who is left to try.
